Good things #9
In which I realise you can actually buy Caesar dressing and my cousin swoops in to recommend a £15 home facial
Dear friends,
Happy Friday! And a very warm welcome to all the new subscribers who signed up to Emily in Cambridge this week. Especially those who were coerced into doing so by my family and friends.
This newsletter will come to you every Friday (around lunchtime depending on how much coffee I’ve had) and will be crammed with good things and recommendations: Books, Podcasts, Treasures from the Internet, TV, Beauty, Lifestyle, Food and general musings.
First up, a little collaboration:
Beauty by Alexandra Bailey: Sarah Chapman Skinesis 3D moisture infusion masks
So I wanted to include some beauty bits in this newsletter, but I know absolutely nothing about beauty. My beauty tips are still, as they have been since 1996: Body Shop perfume and cover every inch of your body in cocoa butter. Ooh and put Vaseline on your eye lashes before bed! Learned from Bliss Magazine in 1996 and still going strong.
Luckily, my cousin Alex has evolved past my level and is a total expert on the best beauty buys (plus she has a keen eye for luxury) so I’m throwing the next bit over to her for a beauty recommendation this week. Alex, over to you:
“My current favourite beauty treat is Sarah Chapman Skinesis 3D moisture infusion masks. Expensive at £15, but much cheaper than a facial and SO worth it. Victoria Beckham and Meghan Markle are fans of Sarah’s work and she has a clinic in Chelsea where apparently her signature facials are the stuff of legend!
“The mask has a gel-like texture and comes with an outer and inner protective layer (remember to remove these as I didn’t read the instructions properly and nearly wasted it!).
“Sit back in the mask for 10-15 mins and then remove and rub in the remaining product for a huge boost of hydration. It’s also very calming!”
Thank you, cousin!
(Seriously though, Vaseline on your eyelashes…give it a try.)

Food: Creamy Caesar Salad Dressing
Without a doubt this chicken Caesar salad was my dinner of the week. Maybe even of the month. You probably already know you can buy Caesar dressing, but honestly it has never even occurred to me. I thought the “Caesaring” of salads was something that only happened in a restaurant. Or in Ancient Rome. And, after having a chicken Caesar salad in a spontaneous moment at a restaurant a few weeks ago, I thought, “I wonder…”
Roast chicken, anchovies, parmesan, the whole nine yards. And also, while we’re here, why would a person ever buy croutons when they can be made to the highest quality (as pictured) using merely bread, olive oil, salt and an oven? This is going on my permanent dinners list from now on.

Podcasts: The Big Green Money Machine
I listened to episode one of this new podcast from Deborah Meaden, which I know about because Steven Bartlett tweeted about it (when will I stop going on about Steven Bartlett? Never!). Anyway, the premise Deborah Meaden talks to some of the world's biggest business names about climate change.
And in episode one she (together with Wake Up To Money’s Felicity Hannah) talks to Easy Jet CEO Johan Lundgren about whether it’s still morally OK to fly? And when I say they “talk” to him I mean they absolutely grill and annihilate him on how flying can possibly be morally OK? How can it be OK, Johan? Hmm? HMM??! Scary Deborah, and an interesting listen if you’re into learning what flying might look like in the future.
Podcasts: The Secret History of Flight 149
Another podcast recommendation because I’ve done a lot of housework this week with my earphones in.
Synopsis: “Imagine boarding a flight thinking you’re heading on holiday, but instead you get taken hostage by Saddam Hussein. It might sound far-fetched, but in August 1990 this really happened to the passengers and crew of BA Flight 149. What followed has been dubbed the most shocking government cover-up of the last thirty years.”
I’m just two episodes in but it’s as gripping as it sounds.
Treasure from the internet: A little girl sings Let It Go in a bomb shelter
Just in case you haven’t seen this viral video from the start of the week, this little girl was sheltering in Ukraine, when she stood up and sang Let It Go from Frozen and everyone went quiet, even the babies.
Anyone who’s spent time with any little girl over the last few years will have experienced this situation first hand (we’ve had Frozen on a loop in my house for almost 7 years now), but usually the singer is in the safety of her own living room and not in a bomb shelter.
The video drew attention from Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who composed the song with her husband, Robert Lopez, as well as Idina Menzel who sang the song originally. Kristen tweeted:
“Dear Little Girl with the beautiful voice, my husband and I wrote this song as part of a story about healing a family in pain. The way you sing it is like a magic trick that spreads the light in your heart and heals everyone who hears it. Keep singing! We are listening!”
I know this is just one little girl, representing thousands of little girls and boys, but I read subsequently that this particular little girl has made it to the safety of Poland. And that (for now) is a very good thing.
Websites: The Week’s Daily Briefing
Ugh. So many websites, newsfeeds and places to get your information, and with so much going on, it’s impossible to stay informed (or calm!). Most of us quickly scroll through a few sites in the morning, but there’s a lot to sort through and you’re busy.
If you want to feel like the president and have a daily briefing of what’s going on then I’d recommend the Daily Briefing page of The Week. It’s the ten things you need to know, every morning at 8am. One paragraph on each news story, gathered from trustworthy independent sources, and you’re fully up to speed and ready for coffee.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s “Good Things” newsletter.
If you have, will you please do me a favour and send it to a friend encouraging them to subscribe too? Thank you to everyone who has already done this. I promise I won’t spam your friend, it’s just one email a week, and hopefully it’ll brighten their Fridays.
You can find me on Twitter @emilyincam if you want to say “Hello” or you can leave a comment!
See you next week.
Emily xx
