Good Things #21
Notes on Heartbreak, fifteen ice creams for £2.79, watching Glastonbury not from a tent but on the TV and a cracker of a new Sky Doc.
Dear Friend,
Good Things coming atcha!
Books: Notes on Heartbreak, by Annie Lord
I wish I’d written this book so much. I’m so mad about it. Not that I could have written it because it’s a brilliant, brilliant thing. I could have written a much worse version of it, so it’s probably best that Annie’s done it properly instead. If you’ve ever felt heartbreak and needed reassurance that someone else has also experienced it (which, spoiler alert yes, everyone has), then this is the one for you.
Annie Lord is Vogue’s dating columnist (how cool) and, Cambridge friends, she’s at Waterstones on July 7th if you want to come with me and stare at someone who is able to describe human emotions in a way that positively glitters? Annie will be in conversation with Diyora Shadijanova, the editor of gal-dem. Tickets are £5 and available here.
TV: Glastonbury on the TV
I’ve never been to Glastonbury. No one who knows me in real life will be surprised by that. Let’s just say I don’t think I’d like it. But I DO like watching it on TV very much indeed. Give me a BBC iPlayer interactive red button over a tent and a pair of wellies any day. Without trying to sound like one of those music-grumps, there’s no live music on the telly anymore. And after the big Covid cancellation of fun, watching bands and artists performing on a stage in front of happy, smiling crowds turned out to be even more enjoyable than it usually is. A highlight was Billie Eilish who headlined the Pyramid Stage on the Friday night. If you’re not a ‘young person’, I beg you not to dismiss Eilish. She’s utterly fantastic. Although this Tweet did make me laugh…
TV: Scouting for Girls: Fashion’s Darkest Secret, Sky Documentaries
Oh look, another industry where young girls were abused and exploited by the powerful men in charge. This time it’s the story (told by the models who were there) of how modelling agents groomed and coerced them when they were as young as 15. Unpleasant, but we need to keep telling and exposing these stories no matter how relentless and depressing it feels. A good documentary about a bad thing.
Gianni’s Family Favourites Multibox of ice creams, Aldi, £2.79
This box of ice creams is TWO POUNDS AND SEVENTY NINE PENCE. In a world where a 99 from the ice cream van can be as much as a fiver, just say no. There are FIFTEEN ice creams in this box and they’re really decent, good quality ones. Big-ish too. It’s like a cost of living loophole into a parallel universe. Get them before someone notices the glitch in the matrix and stops you.
Treasure from the internet:
A bit quick this time, sorry. Or maybe it’s better this way so you can just skim read it?
Life is crazy busy; my son, I suspect, has chicken pox and this afternoon I have to go to my daughter’s school summer fair. Please send me your good thoughts.
Hope you enjoyed this edition of Good Things. If so, please give it a like with the little heart <3.
Good Things is a fortnightly newsletter so you can expect it to land in your inbox every other Friday, packed with goodness.
See you on Friday, July 15.
Love, Emily xx
